Russia aims to completely rearm its rocket artillery brigades with new multiple-launch rocket systems (MLRS) by 2020.
Tass News Agency quoted Missile and Artillery Force Chief Lieutenant-General Mikhail Matveyevsky as saying on May 29, 2017, “The rearmament of all missile brigades with the modern Iskander-M missile system and rocket artillery brigades with Tornado-S large-caliber multiple launch rocket systems will be completed.”
According to Tass, he was referencing plans through the year 2020.
He added that Tornado-S MLRS deliveries are beginning in 2017, which was noted by Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov earlier in the year.
The 300mm Tornado-S will have more accurate munitions than the BM-30 Smerch, with longer range.
Deliveries of BM-30 Smerch MLRS remain ongoing. The Western Military District took delivery of seven Smerch systems in mid-April, with an expectation that another five would arrive before the end of that month.
