The Democratic Republic of Congo has received over two dozen modernized tanks from Ukraine.
Citing a report issued by the State Export Control Service of Ukraine, defenceWeb reported on August 2, 2017 that Ukraine delivered 25 T-64BV-1 main battle tanks to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The delivery marks the first time the T-64 has been delivered to an operator outside of the former Soviet Union.
DefenceWeb noted that Ukraine had announced a $11.5 million contract in early 2014 to supply 50 tanks to a foreign customer. The outbreak of conflict in eastern Ukraine and subsequent T-64BV deliveries to the Ukrainian military prompted speculation that the export deal had been canceled. However, it appears that at least half of the agreement was carried out.
Ukraine is one of the primary suppliers to the Democratic Republic of Congo, having sent tanks, helicopters, armored personnel carriers, self-propelled howitzers, and other military systems in the last two decades.
