Fateh Submarine to Enter Iranian Navy in September

Iran will soon put into service a new submarine.

IHS Jane’s, citing the Iranian Ministry of Defense, reported on August 9, 2017 that Iran’s first Fateh class submarine will be commissioned into the Navy next month. Admiral Amir Rastegari, quoted by the Defense Ministry, said it would enter service during Holy Defence Week.

Ahead of commissioning, the submarine has been undergoing testing. Work has been ongoing on the Fateh submarine since at least September 2011.

Navy officials had previously suggested it would be ready to enter service soon.

In April, Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said, “The missile-launching warship named Separ and the submarine, Fateh, will join the Navy in the near future.”

Iran may also be working on a second submarine in the class though the status of the submarine’s construction is unknown.
