Russia Shows Off Il-22PP

Russia has revealed its new Il-22 variant, during the celebrations for the 105th anniversary of the Russian Air Force.

Over Kubinka airbase, Russia made a public demonstration of the Il-22PP, a new special mission aircraft for the military.

The aircraft have been refitted with modern electronic warfare systems capable of disabling electronics systems on enemy jets. RBTH reported in November 2016 that a source told it, “The new equipment is capable of ‘blinding’ Airborne Early Warning and Control System [AWACS] aircraft.

“In addition to these, the Il-22PP Porubshchik effectively counteracts Patriot air-defense systems,” the source added, referencing the U.S.-made air-defense system, in service with several NATO countries and other American allies.

At least three Il-22PPs reportedly entered service in 2016.
