Raytheon to Improve B-2 Antennas Under $40 Million Contract Mod

by Matthew Beres, Airborne Retrofit & Modernization Analyst, Forecast International.

Raytheon was recently awarded a $39.9 million contract modification to produce an additional two B-2 antenna tool aids. This brings Raytheon’s antenna supplemental contract up to $113.7 million in value.  A similar contract, for $23.4 million, was awarded to Raytheon in September 2017.

Antenna improvements are made as part of the Low Observable Signature and Supportability Modifications (LOSSM) program. This program, originally called the Aft Deck Crack Repair project, addresses cracks in the titanium aft decks of the B-2 that serve as a fairing for the high-temperature engine exhaust gases. Low observable modifications increase aircraft availability, decrease LO maintenance, and maintain and improve the combat-ready LO signature for the B-2 fleet. Although LO mods are the LOSSM program’s priority, it does include a number of other structural, material, diagnostic, avionics, and weapons improvements, including to antennas.

Other programs that feature antenna installations or modifications include the Common Very Low Frequency Terminal program, the Advanced Extremely High Frequency Strategic Communications program, and the Military GPS User Equipment (MGUE) program.
