*Thursday Update* Airbus’ Orders at Farnborough; Scores Commitment for A220s

Airbus announced large orders for the very popular A320neo narrowbody airliner at the Farnborough Air Show along with new orders for the larger A350 XWB widebody and a commitment for the A220.   We don’t expect to see any orders for the A380 at the show.

Here are the deals announced by Airbus:


-Airbus signed a Memorandum of Understanding with “a leading global lessor” for 80 A320neo Family aircraft without identifying the customer. Engine selection will be made at a later date.

– An affiliate of Macquarie AirFinance Group Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Macquarie Group Limited, ordered 20 A320neo narrowbodies to add to its existing portfolio of 119 Airbus aircraft (110 A320s and nine A330s).

Goshawk Aviation Limited, the 50/50 joint venture between Hong Kong-based conglomerate NWS Holdings Limited and Chow Tai Fook Enterprises Limited, ordered 20 A320neo jets. Goshawk Aviation is based in Dublin, Ireland, and has an owned, managed and committed fleet of over 220 aircraft.

– The lessor Golden Falcon Aviation, the exclusive aircraft provider of Wataniya Airways, confirmed an order for 25 A320neo’s. The order follows an earlier MoU announced at last year’s Dubai Airshow.

Vistara, a New Delhi-based carrier, signed a Letter of Intent for 13 A320neo’s to add to its existing portfolio of 21 Airbus aircraft.  It also committed to an additional 37 A320neo’s from lessors. The combined agreements would add 50 A320neo’s to Vistara’s fleet. The airline selected the CFM LEAP engine to power the aircraft.

– Oman’s first budget airline, SalamAir, signed an agreement to add six new A320neo’s to its fleet, five of which are on lease from an undisclosed lessor.  The airline, which began service in January 2017, is owned by the Muscat National Development and Investment Company (ASAAS) and other Omani private investors.

Starlux Airlines of Taiwan signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the purchase of 17 A350s for its future long-haul service, including twelve A350-1000s and five A350-900s. Starlux is a new full-service airline based in Taipei and founded by Taiwanese aviation veteran Chang Kuo-wei, former Chairman of EVA Air. The carrier will launch regional operations in early 2020, followed by long haul services early in 2022.

Sichaun Airlines ordered 10 Airbus A350 XWBs. The airline operates the largest all-Airbus fleet in China with over 130 Airbus family aircraft. In addition to its domestic network, Sichuan Airlines now operates on over 30 international routes.


– Spain’s Level, a low cost long-haul airline owned by International Airlines Group, ordered two more A330-200s, taking its total order for the type to seven. Airbus will deliver the aircraft in 2019.

-Japan’s Peach Aviation will become the first Asian operator of the Airbus A321LR aircraft, following the conversion of an existing order for two A320neo’s.  The aircraft will join the fleet of the Osaka-based low cost carrier (LCC) in 2020.

– An unidentified customer signed a Memorandum of Understanding covering 25 A321neo and 75 A320neo jets. Airbus says the customer is adding to its existing orders for A320neo family aircraft.

– An unidentified airline ordered eight A350-900s in a deal worth $2.54 billion.

A start-up U.S. airline signed a memorandum of understanding covering 60 A220-300s with deliveries to begin in 2021. This new airline is backed up by a group of investors led by David Neeleman, founder of JetBlue, investor in TAP in Portugal and controlling shareholder in Azul airlines in Brazil.  The A220-300 was recently rebadged by Airbus after the manufacturer took a controlling interest in Bombardier’s CSeries program.


– An unidentified customer signed a Memorandum of Understanding for six A330neo family widebody jets. The MoU was the first sign of interest for the re-engined A330 model at the show so far.

-Uganda Airlines, the national carrier of Uganda, signed a memorandum of understanding for two A330-800neo widebodies.

Mexico’s Viva Aerobus firmed up an amendment for 25 incremental A321neo and 16 up conversions of A320neos to A321neos to the airline’s existing purchase agreement. This latest order brings the low-cost carriers total order book to 80 A320 Family aircraft (including 15 A320ceo, 24 A320neo, and 41 A321neo).


Vietnam’s Vietjet signed a Memorandum of Understanding covering 50 more A321neo’s. Once finalized, the new order deal will take its backlog of orders for the A320 family to 129 aircraft.

 An unidentified customer signed a Memorandum of Understanding for 10 A320neo jets.

AirAsia X ordered 34 more A330neo’s, taking the airline’s total number of orders for the type to 100 aircraft. The Malaysia-based carrier will be the first in Asia to operate the type.
