Russia Launches Warship in St. Petersburg

Russia has launched a new warship in St. Petersburg.

The Pella Shipyard in St. Petersburg launched a new corvette, called Burya, on October 23, 2018. The vessel is the fourth warship of the Project 22800 ‘Karakurt’ class and was laid down in December 2016. The other three vessels in the class — Uragan, Taifun, and Shkval — were all built at Pella Shipyard, and several are to be commissioned this year. According to TASS, the Navy will ultimately procure 18 such corvettes.

Speaking at the ceremony for the vessel’s launching, Navy Shipbuilding Deputy Chief Captain 1st Rank Mikhail Krasnopeyev said, “This is a remarkable day for us and let me express the words of gratitude on behalf of Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Korolyov for your labor in creating the warship of this series.”

He discussed the planned timeframe for delivery of Burya to the Navy, indicating that it will take at least a year for the vessel to be ready for commissioning. “Let me also express the confidence that the pace of the construction work achieved will make it possible to start the ship’s factory and sea trials in 2019 and transfer it to us, naval sailors, in 2020,” he said.

Project 22800 corvettes displace around 800 tonnes and can reach speeds over 30 knots. For armaments, the vessels have Pantsir-ME surface-to-air missile systems as well as Kalibr strike missiles.
