Lithuania Planning JLTV Acquisition

Lithuania’s Ministry of National Defense has submitted a procurement application to the U.S. government concerning a potential acquisition of 200 Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTVs) produced by Oshkosh Defense. The final terms and conditions of the deal are to be ironed out by 2020, according to Lithuanian Vice Minister of National Defense Giedrimas Jeglinskas.

Between 2020 and 2023 the ministry will allocate around EUR142 million ($162 million) toward procuring the vehicles.

The purchase will form part of the Lithuanian Armed Forces’ mechanization program, which also involves the procurement of the Boxer 8×8 infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) from the ARTEC consortium of Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Rheinmetall. That purchase, made on August 22, 2016, involves 88 Boxer IFVs that are referred to as Vilkas (Wolves) in Lithuanian service.

The JLTVs will augment the armored all-terrain mobility niche in the Lithuanian Armed Forces’ mechanization inventory, currently filled by HMMWV and Toyota Land Cruiser 200 vehicles.
