House Armed Services Committee Chairman Proposes $733 Billion Defense Bill

House Armed Services Committee Chairman Adam Smith (D-Wash.) has outlined a proposed $733 national security budget for the 2020 fiscal year, falling $17 billion short of the president’s request of $750 billion.  These figures include funding for the Pentagon as well as defense-related programs in the Department of Energy and other agencies.  The $733 billion is what the administration was originally planning to seek in FY20 before the president decided to increase his request to $750 billion.

The $733 billion proposal is contained in the Chairman’s Mark, which is the baseline document that will be used for the HASC markup during which amendments can be made.  The committee markup is scheduled for June 12 at 10:00 am.
