Russian forces in Crimea have been strengthening defenses in preparation for a possible Ukrainian counteroffensive. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he intends to take back the peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014.

During a visit to the Pentagon this week, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal continued to urge the U.S. to send fighter jets to Ukraine. “America can once again demonstrate its leadership by providing Ukraine with F-15 or F-16 aircraft,” he said. The U.S. government says it is focusing on sending higher priority items to Ukraine.
Ukraine has asked Spain to provide F-16 jets, as well as artillery munitions and amphibious vehicles. Madrid is sending Leopard tanks and plans to donate additional armored personnel carriers.
South Korea has reiterated its position that it will not send lethal weapons to Ukraine. Seoul has been providing humanitarian assistance since Russia’s invasion.
