The Iranian defense industry will put its Bavar 373 surface-to-air missile system on display later this month.
In an interview with Tasnim News Agency, Iranian Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Amir Hatami said that, on August 22, Iran will show off a range of air defense hardware, including the Bavar 373. August 22 is Iran’s National Day of the Defense Industry, the media outlet reported.
He noted, “There will be very good news in the field of air defense on August 22. I hope the defense capability of our country will significantly increase with the demonstration and transfer of the Bavar 373 system, which will happen on Defense Industry Day.”
First shown off to the public in 2016, the Bavar 373 is said to be a local analogue of the Russian-made S-300. After Russia suspended the sale of the S-300 to Iran in 2010, the Iranian defense industry worked to create its own version of the system. Even though Moscow lifted its ban in 2015 and subsequently sold the S-300PMU-2 to Iran, development of Bavar 373 has continued.
Last year, Brig. Gen. Mahmoud Ebrahiminejad said that the Bavar 373 had successfully completed tests of ballistic missile interception.
Iranian media reports that the Bavar 373 utilizes three different types of missiles designed to reach targets at varying altitudes. It uses a phased-array fire-control radar called Me’raj-4.
