The U.S. Navy’s Surface ASW Combat Systems Integration program will likely hold at an average of $23.5 million to almost $29 million per year over the next several years as the SQQ-89(V) is integrated into DDG-51 class destroyers and CG-47 class cruisers.

This program is tasked with improving existing surface ship undersea warfare sonar system capabilities through the development of quick and affordable technologies in support of littoral ASW, theater ASW, mine reconnaissance, and overall Sea Shield efforts. It also includes R&D toward improving the SQQ-89 Surface ASW Combat System. New shore trainer capabilities are also being developed.

As the DDG-51 and CG-47 classes now form the backbone of the U.S. Navy’s surface combatant flotillas, they are being deployed in environments that have significant sonar challenges and are facing a growing threat from midget and coastal submarines. While the basic technologies needed to confront these challenges are being developed under other headings, the integration of the technologies into fleet use has been assigned to the Surface ASW Combat Systems Integration program.

Another point to keep in mind is that Littoral Combat Ships will likely offer significant opportunities for work under this program in the medium and long terms. Littoral Combat Ships require specific ASW-oriented system modules in order to carry out their assigned task of combating non-nuclear submarines in littoral waters.
