New Argentine Radar Installed in Villaguay

The Argentine Air Force has completed installation of a Long Range 3D Primary Radar (RP3DLAP in Spanish)radar in the town of Villaguay, Argentina, a little less than 200 miles northwest from Buenos Aires.

INVAP SA began production of the RP3DLAP in February 2012, and the first system was installed in Las Lomitas in November of that year.  Plans call for Argentina to acquire 12 of the radar systems.  Another station for the radar opened in October 2014.  Three more radar stations were declared operational in February 2017, making the Villaguay site the sixth operational radar station.

The RP3DLAP is a fixed radar designed to provide air surveillance. The Villaguay site was inaugurated just in time for the G20 meeting to be held in Buenos Aires. Crews stationed at the radar site will cooperate with a site in San Pedro, about 100 miles away from Buenos Aires, to provide complete coverage of the airspace over the city.
