The U.S. Army is seeking industry input for a next-generation autonomous breaching vehicle that could reduce risk to troops in warzones.

The service recently released a Request for Information (RFI) as part of early market research for the Breaching and Demolition Ground Engineer Robot (BaDGER) program, led by Product Manager for Bridging (PdM Bridging). According to the Army, the new capability is intended to support autonomous breaching by performing “detection, reduction, proofing and marking while removing Soldiers from the breach,” according to the notice.

The RFI is designed to help the Army shape cost, schedule, and performance requirements, while also assessing whether there are any commercial solutions available that meet the program’s needs. The Army is also gauging industry interest in a future industry day as it advances the effort.

According to the solicitation, BaDGER will be capable of breaching complex obstacles like triple strand wire, cement barriers, walls, and dirt berms, as well as neutralizing explosive hazards, minefields, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The system is envisioned to support unmanned breaching operations for Combat Engineer Companies (CEC) assigned to Infantry and Stryker Brigade Combat Teams.

The Army is exploring “technology advancements in autonomy, explosives, fusing, delivery, and wireless detonation provide options to replace existing equipment,” the service noted in the RFI.

Ultimately, the BaDGER platform is intended to provide Army divisions with a safer and more effective means to maneuver and defeat enemy obstacles, while leveraging the latest developments in robotics and autonomous systems.

Industry responses are due by May 22.
