Azerbaijan Acquires DANA SpH, RM-70 MLRS

In a video and photo release, the Azerbaijan Ministry of Defense revealed new systems that Azerbaijan has acquired.

The Azeri armed forces are currently engaging in a military exercise, as announced by the country’s Ministry of Defense.

In a press release, the ministry noted, “Under the plan approved by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Mr. Ilham Aliyev, large-scale exercises with the participation of different types of troops and units started on September 18. Trainings include up to 15,000 personnel, over 150 tanks and armored vehicles, 120 different caliber rocket and artillery units, jet missile shooting systems and mortars, 20 different-purpose warfare aircraft, as well as new types of radio-electronic exploration equipment and non-pilot aircraft involved. Trainings will last till September 22.”

The Ministry of Defense included in its press release several photos as well as video, which reveal the presence of DANA self-propelled howitzers, likely the M1 version produced by the Czech Republic, as well as the RM-70, a multiple launch rocket system.

Over half a dozen DANA M1s were seen driving down a highway in Azerbaijan. Similarly, over half a dozen RM-70s could be seen on the highway as well.

The systems are not known to have previously been in Azeri service. It is unclear when the country purchased the systems or how many were delivered.
