The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) is preparing to launch a competitive procurement process to replace its aging Hawk T1 and T2 advanced jet trainers, a decision formalized by Defence Minister Maria Eagle in July 2025. This move aligns with the UK Strategic Defence Review and aims to acquire a more cost-effective fast-jet training platform for the Royal Air Force (RAF), with a decision anticipated in 2026. The Hawk T2, currently central to RAF fast-jet pilot training, was initially expected to serve until 2040, but evolving operational needs and maintenance issues have accelerated the search for a replacement. The new platform will also be considered for the RAF’s Red Arrows aerobatic display team.
Several key contenders are expected to vie for the contract. A Boeing-Saab team, potentially in collaboration with BAE Systems, is an interesting prospect. Boeing and Saab have already partnered on the T-7A Red Hawk trainer for the U.S. Air Force, which is nearing full development and offers an all-glass cockpit and embedded mission-training software. If BAE Systems, the original developer of the Hawk, joins this bid, it could offer a compelling package combining proven international expertise with local industrial ties.
Other prominent international players include Leonardo with its M-346, a twin-engine advanced/lead-in fighter trainer already in service with several air forces (including Italy and Israel) and optimized for training pilots on advanced combat aircraft like the Eurofighter and F-35. Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) is also expected to offer its T-50 Golden Eagle, a supersonic trainer co-developed with Lockheed Martin, which has seen success in various export markets. Finally, Aeralis, a UK-based start-up, presents a modular jet trainer design that it claims can offer significant cost reductions and adaptability for various roles, including basic and advanced training, and light combat. Aeralis emphasizes its British design and manufacturing capabilities, aiming to provide a domestic solution for the RAF. The ultimate decision will likely weigh factors such as cost-effectiveness, advanced training capabilities, industrial benefits for the UK, and long-term through-life support.
