Another Endorsement for Raytheon’s Versatile APY-10 Radar

by C. Zachary Hofer, Electronics Analyst, Forecast International.

Raytheon’s APY-10 maritime, littoral, and overland surveillance radar has received another endorsement through an award for its sole platform, the Boeing P-8 aircraft. On January 28, the U.S. Department of Defense announced that the Navy awarded Boeing a $2.47 billion modification to a previous fixed-price-incentive-firm contract in order to exercise an option for additional P-8A aircraft.

Under the terms of the deal, the U.S. Navy would receive 16 full-rate-production Lot III P-8As and Australia would receive four. That translates to orders for 20 additional APY-10 radar systems, which are produced on a one-for-one basis with all P-8As.

The genesis of the APY-10 radar can be traced to a Request for Proposals to replace aging P-3 Orions; the program culminated with the design and procurement of the P-8. In July 2005, Raytheon received the award to provide Boeing with a platform-specific radar, eventually leading to the first APY-10 deliveries in late 2008.

On board the P-8, the APY-10 provides synthetic aperture radar imaging, search, detection, and tracking features. These make the APY-10 much more versatile than many competing radar systems, allowing for operation over land and in littoral and maritime environments, and providing anti-ship, anti-submarine, and ISR mission fulfillment. Most radars are specialized for either land or sea use exclusively.

The delivery period for the 20 FRP Lot III P-8s runs through December 2018 and will be overseen by the U.S. Naval Air Systems Command of Patuxent River, Maryland.
